Consumers have come to expect that 9-1-1 will just work, no matter where you are. Today, however, despite substantive investment in Wireless and VoIP E911 systems, it is clear that there is still substantive room for improvement. GPS-based systems have poor performance indoors and in urban canyons; network-based systems suffer from poor coverage in rural areas. Rosum's reliable indoor/outdoor TV+GPS location solution delivers public safety-reliable location information that can be used to route responders to the right location.
The broadcast TV infrastructure is highly robust, typically with backup power at the transmitter and studio. TV is not a "best-effort" infrastructure; it is a must-work infrastructure, which supports both the broadcast industry's commercial business and its public safety and public service obligations. This, along with TV's wall-penetrating signals, make it an ideal signal to use for robust, accurate, and rapid location determination in case of emergency.
In March 2008, 2Wire announced it had adopted Rosum to provide timing and location information to femtocells, including to support future E9-1-1 applications.
